HPS Lights?

Ok growing inside tomatos, what is the best lighting and darkness period does it have to be, I am thinking about buying a 400 watt HPS grow lite and was wondering if this the would work and should I buy a grow tent too..

Seems like a lot of trouble and expense to go through for tomatoes. Would be a lot cheaper to use a couple flourescents with full spectrum bulbs.
