Question:

HPV detected pap negative????

I'm hoping someone could shed light on this. I recently had my baby girl July 8th and went for my post natal appointment where my ob/gyn gave me a pap. A week later they called and told me my pap came back negative but HPV was detected. I was so confused because I've been with my hubby for 8+ years but she told me I could have gotten it years ago and it was dormant. She told me it was detected at the beginning of the pregnancy, why she didn't tell me god only knows. I'm very scared now because I have to go back for a follow up in 6 months and I guess they want to see if my pap is still negative and my cells haven't become abnormal. I read HPV can go away on it's own and the nurse there told me I just have to eat well and that I'm young. She also said since I got the Gardisal vaccine 2 yrs ago I should be fine. I'm sooo scared I will go back and it will be abnormal. I don't want to go through that painful biopsy or those treatments that effect your fertility. My question is to all you ladies out there is, what are the chances it will be normal and my body fight it off? Has anyone gone through this before? Does the majority of women test negative after 6 months? I guess the pregnancy hormones made it come out of hiding!!!! Please any insight will help me...I don't know how I'll survive the next 6 months.......

  1. You should be fine. This also happened to me. I had to go through treatment. It wasn't too bad though.  I have now had 2 normal pap exams with no signs. I, like you, have been only with my hubby for 8 years and my doc says the same thing. It was probably dormant or he gave it to me, then it was dormant.  It only comes out when the body can't fight it off any longer. I had just had my 2nd baby too. Since then I have had another without any problems. Make sure you try and get your vitamin intake daily. I think it helps. Otherwise you should be fine.

  2. I have HPV. High Risk HPV. I really don't know how long i been having it for since it was the first time i did a pap smear. At first i was scared and i felt bad since i had infected my bf (my new bf of 2 years). The doctor told me that since I'm young (19 yrs old) my body can fight it off. All i had to do was boost up my immune system. I had a procedure called LEEP. A wire the scrapes off the bad cells in order for good ones to come back out. This procedure should help prevent cervical cancer since i do have precancerous cells but can also help me when getting rid of HPV. I have to go every 3 months for the next 5 years in order to do a pap and make sure I'm doing okay. My first pap is in 2 weeks after my LEEP surgery. I'm very nervous to see the outcome...I truly hope and i pray that it comes out negative!!! But there is a low chance since it can take from 6 months to 2 years.............Just know your not alone...how did i survive?...with the support of my BF and friends!!! I also hear that over 80% of sexually active people have this...but either way i want this virus to be clear out of my system...and the good thing is that once you get rid of the type of HPV you can get it again....but remember there are over 100 types......

  3. The fact that your Pap smear didn't show any abnormal cell changes is good.  We can carry the virus and never have abnormal cell changes.  The pre-cancer cell changes are where the concerns need to be placed.  The HPV test looks for viral load and once the virus goes into a low viral load HPV is not detected.  This can happen within in 6 months but it may take longer.

The vaccine does not prevent HPV types that you have already acquire.  Since you have been with your husband for 8 years you most likely acquired your HPV type 8 years ago.

The vaccine only prevents two high risk HPV types 16 and 18 and two low risk HPV types 6 and 11.  They are over 30 genital HPV types.

The vaccine does not treat HPV types that we have.

Our HPV test does not specifically tell us what HPV type we carry.  The HPV test only screens for high risk HPV types..

It was very wrong of your doctor not to tell you that your HPV test was positive at the beginning of your pregnancy...and very wrong for your doctor’s office to mislead you regarding the vaccine.

Most likely the pregnancy did suppress your immune system a bit and the HPV virus showed itself...

Most women do build immunity to their acquired HPV type in a couple of years..some women take longer...

Taking a good multi-vitamin....eating your greens...broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, reduce stress...adequate sleep (this may be more difficult since you have a new baby)...exercise...and limit alcohol...will help your body fight the virus.
