HRT team principal Colin Kolles threatens protest if FIA does not ban blown diffusers – Formula 1
Hispania Racing Team team principal Colin Kolles has threatened that if the International Automobile Federation (FIA) does not ban the Blown Diffuser technology before the Monaco Grand Prix, they will not take part in the race.
Kolles wrote a letter to the FIA president Jean Todt stating that blown diffusers were against the race laws and should be banned before the next race.
Kolles had previously threatened the FIA officials that HRT will protest the Spanish Grand Prix but after the FIA postponed the decision, HRT participated in the race.
However, Kolles now thinks that the Monaco GP should not see the diffuser technology.
In a statement to Todt, Kolles stated, “The exhausts to be banned immediately because they are against the regulations. I'm obviously expecting a response before next weekend's race. If there is no change then we will have no other choice but to protest.”
Kolles’ anger against the diffuser comes in the light of the technology which gives an extra edge to the bigger teams.
Kolles added, “The blown exhaust has been taken to a different level where cars are able to use hot gases when they are off the throttle. They are moving, but you are not allowed to use anything that moves to influence the aerodynamics. It has to be all
fixed.”
Kolles added that bigger teams are using this technology to increase the downforce of their cars in the corners whereas smaller teams use the conventional way on the corners which is to slow down.
FIA race director Charlie Whiting recently said that blown diffusers were against the rules and will be banned when the committee decides.
Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) chairman Martin Whitmarsh stated that his team, McLaren, and some of the higher ranked teams will lose advantage if the technology is banned.
The decision on the blown diffuser is expected before the Monaco Grand Prix on May 29, 2011.
Kolles will hope that this extra edge of the bigger teams is ended and they can challenge them actively in the season.
