HSBC Champions event adds Ryder Cup players to its field
The good news keeps on getting better for the HSBC Champions event, beginning on 4 November in Shanghai, China.
This past August, the tournament, the fourth and final World Golf Championship event of the season, received word that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, number-one and three in the world
respectively, will tee it up at the Sheshan International Golf Club in early November.
It was announced Thursday that the tournament, which was awarded World Golf Championship status last year, will welcome a trio of players who were part of the winning European team last
week at the Ryder Cup. Tournament officials announced that Paul Casey (ranked seventh), Luke Donald (ranked eighth), and Rory McIlroy (ranked ninth) will all take part in the $7 million event.
With Lee Westwood (ranked second) and Martin Kaymer (ranked sixth) already in the field, the event will have an elite field, boasting seven of the top-10 golfers in the world.
Padraig Harrington, three-time major champion and member of Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team, will also tee it up at the event.
"I really liked the Sheshan Course and having finished tied 14th in 2006, I know that I can do well on the course," said Luke Donald, who won three out of four possible points for Europe
last week in Wales. "I think it is great that the World Golf Championships have made it part of their series as Asia plays an ever more important part of global golf."
McIlory, the Northern Irishman who was a fan favourite at last week’s Ryder Cup, said he loves playing in front of the Chinese fans. "I am most looking forward to playing in front of the
fantastic Chinese fans as they created a unique atmosphere."
Harrington agreed with his fellow teammate. "I really enjoy visiting Shanghai and love the enthusiasm of the Chinese fans, so look forward to returning every year."
