HSBC and moving to London?

I am a student and I will be studying abroad in the UK in London for a semester. I already have a bank account with HSBC so how do I go about transffering to a UK account? Can I wait till I get there and use my debit card as I normally would until I set it up as a UK account or do I need to transfer accounts before I leave?

We moved here from the US and just opened a new UK bank account. Until we got money in it we used our US debit card in the mean time.

Ask your branch to open an account for you, and yes you can use your card.
