  1. I guess that depends on what type of business you're in. If you deal with pipelines, oil drilling, gas, engineering, etc. HSSE means: Health, Safety, Security and Environment. This describes the code, policies and standards that the industry must follow to maintain health and safety on the job and for the environment.  Companies set these standards and policies based upon various government regulatory requirements to implement into their business practicies, planning, construction, operations, and work environment.

    The government offices usually inspect the companies in specific areas to make sure they are adhering to the company and industry standards they have set in place and that they meet the governments guidelines. Some Governement agencies that are involved in Health, Safety, Security and Environment are:

    * OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor

    Occupational Safety & Health Administration

    * NFPA - National Fire and Protection Agency

    * FERC - Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

    * NTSB - National Transportation Safety Board

    * PHMSA - Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration

    * DOT - US Department of Transportation

    I'm sure there are several other regulatory agencies depending on the specific industry.  See source link below which is to some of these websites.

    Of course I may have missed the mark, as HSSE can also stand for Hardware/Software Systems Engineering.
