I have a Boston Acoustics Avidea 610 system - their 2.0 DVD receiver with 5 speakers & one powered sub. The DVD portion of the receiver just crapped out on me and I'm wondering if I would be able to just pick up a new receiver (not neccessarily from Boston) and hook it up to my speakers/sub. If so, what sort of things do I need to look for regarding compatability? Obviously, the basics like 5.1 support, and all that, but regarding wattages and impedences, do I need to look at that stuff?

  1. Yes. When you set up the new receiver , set all of the speakers to 'small'. I hope you are going to get a good receiver, like Yamaha, Denon, B&K, etc. You can always upgrade the speakers later. Plug EVERYTHING into good surge protection.

  2. no . just look for the rear connections everything will be compatable . rca jacks etc same , main concern speaker to reciever connections , same with sub connector good listining
