  1. Science and Christianity don't work.

Last night on a Christian talk show I heard a woman saying one of the causes of depression is an under active thyroid and the man talking to her said something like "In Africa old people are kept active" and someone this means their thyroid starts working again?

Don't even bother with this. Microbes would of eaten Noah by 900. His natural flora would have probably grown into an inch thick layer if his immune system even existed at that point.

  2. Yea we humans know everything.Especially the know it alls.

  3. One answer was " show me your proof that a year is 365 days" Trust me, that made me laugh.

  4. Christian math with a pinch of wild imagination, a lot of gullibility and 3 cups of ignorance

  5. The Bible.

Where did the Bible get the idea that a man could live for over 900 years?

The mythology of the surrounding areas.

  6. Well I would like to offer a possible answer that is only my take on it and by no means an absolute.

When the fall had occurred, man and women were without sin.  As it says in Romans 6:23 The wages of sin are death.  Well you get paid for your actions.  And sinful action wages are death, spiritually and physically. In other words, as sinned entered the world more and more people saw life expectancy decline.

And if that one is does not float your boat.  Here is another possible and Once again not absolute theory.

Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden so they may not take of the fruit of life.  Which could have been a source of immortality that slowly dwindled off as they no longer ate of the fruit.  This one sounds very far fetched I know.  But its logic is not flawed if you do not question the fruit as being a source of extra-life so to speak.

In both cases you see 900 year old people falling gradually to 600, 300, 200, etc...

Either is feasible as long as you do not refute sin and the fruit as the source.

Food for thought, Homosexuality is a sin, that is an abomination in God's eye.  And the fact that it is medically proven that early homosexuals life average life expectancy is 44, and only 1% actually die of natural causes, reinforces sin is payed back by death.

Please do keep in mind once again.  None are absolute or even held by a majority just my possible answer.

  7. Where did Mighty Ra get the idea that Christians take this passage literally?  We take it for what it is - an example of Hebrew literary devise called exaggeration, to emphasize the superlative- very very old age.   It's the same way when somebody says, "I'm a bloody fool"  We do not expect to see a lunatic having a hemorrhage!

Mighty Ra, where is thy sting?

  8. We have many many sources that say Abraham lived a long life but nothing past that.

  9. Did they really live that long in Genesis?

So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died, (Gen. 5:7).

So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died, (Gen. 5:11).

So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died," (Gen. 5:14).

"So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died," (Gen. 5:17).

"So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died," (Gen. 5:20).

"So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died," (Gen. 5:27).

"So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died," (Gen. 5:31).

How is it possible for people to live that long?  Is the Bible correct about this especially since that our lifespan now, even with technology, is around 70 to 80 years. There are two possible explanations for the longevity of the early people of Genesis.

First, they were so close to the original genetic line of Adam and Eve, that there health was exceedingly great and so they could live this long.

Second, it is noteworthy that the lifespan of people drastically shortens after Noah's ark.  The theory is that there was a covering over the earth, a canopy of water vapor that helped shield the earth of harmful cosmic rays.  The Bible tells us that the firmament opened up and it rained for 40 days, covering the earth.  There is no biblical account of rain prior to this time.  Therefore, some theologians believe that after the flood, after the rain fell and the atmosphere lost a lot of its protective qualities, then the lifespan humans was drastically shortened

  10. Bible babble. Old testicles. Is my spell p****r working? I don't have my reading glasses on.

  11. The Bible duhh! Nothing's impossible with God!

  12. From the same place they get the rest of their ridiculous beliefs: The Bible.

The fact that some nut-jobs here are actually trying to defend that claim is hilarious.

  13. They get that idea from the buy-bull.

  14. The BIBLE

And the BIBLE is proof enough for me.

  15. Easy...because their book of fairytales says so.  I guess it is one of the parts they take literally and not metaphorically.

Not many people have common sense.

  16. Genesis 5:25

i dunno, maybe....not sure....i think because we just FCKIN BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE!

Everybody knows that even if they were homeschooled.

  17. They got it from the bible.

  18. Read the bible, you'll find it's not impossible with GOD!!

And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

    Mark 10:27.

  19. It's not as ridiculous as you think mighty rae.. They did live that long. Not only did they live long but they were much larger. Many skeletal remains have been found of human beings 10 - 13  feet tall... I will post some links below to help you understand better about creation and biblical accounts....This is quite a bit of material and I am sure it will take you quite a long time to go through it so let me know if you want more... Also don't forget to pass it on to your unbelieving friends.. Hope this helps...God bless you !

  20. In the Bible, Methuselah was recorded as living for over 900 years. However, my denomination does not teach Biblical literalism. Literalism is a view largely advocated by Fundamentalists. When I was a kid, I was taught about Methuselah in Christian school, but was never once asked to accept the existence of 900-year-old humans as historical fact.

  21. HEY we Jews KNOW Methuselah lived to be 969...

:-)    In 900 years I will also be 929.. which is almost as old. ;-)

  22. Some people aren't playing with a "full deck of God", it seems..

...the story is allegorical, in the early days Man wasn't as rascally as he would become, and God rewarded people with long lives...akin to the old Greco-Roman tales of the Golden Age of Heroes...as the book goes on, man gets more and more rascally, until we get to the book of Judges - where it's just one rape and murder after another...finally, Kingship and then King David...too bad the Kingdom didn't even outlast his grandson...

The sad thing about the "ageless men" and the "begat" verses is they probably also had some great tales about them...but the editors of the Old Testament didn't find the stories worth including in the text, and now they've been (for the most part) lost to time...it would have given us a lot of insight into the developing thread of the Jewish religion - the cross-cultural and the anti-cultural ideas that interacted with the Mediterranean world...

EDIT:  Since so many of your responders seem to think it "definately" happened, why don't they set up an experiment...create an airtight dome, fill it with the atmosphere they believe existed in this world they describe, and we can test to see if it has a significant effect on the biology of the world inside it....think of the benefits!  If such a thing were even remotely possible, wouldn't all of these so-called scientists who embrace "creationism " (hey, read any of the creationist's handbooks - apparently the world is filled with them!) be working to discover just how it was possible?  But not so much as one does, and the closet thing we got is Michael Jackson sleeping in an old iron lung (perhaps he's one of the "scientists" they are refering to!) - If you have the basic information - as some you your responders claim to - then such an experiment is not outside the realm of possibility, and could be begun RIGHT NOW...unless of course they are lying, in which case I'm wasting my breath...

  23. bible-bashers who know that knowledge is over-rated compared to an over-rated mistranslated and re-edited book

the answers are imaginative and depressing with the stupidity shown

edit:firstly to address Steven: "homosexual" was coined in 1869 so it isn't a sin and the bible was mistranslated as both links show

secondly the site he used is a religious site and the guy's a bigot with no knowledge of homosexuality and he's a ranting homophobe

  24. Well I dont blame you for your ignorance, but if you're talking from a Christian view. Back then poeple were more committed to God, and that's why God gifted them a longer life. Or another other possible solutions are that back then, the time may differ from today. eg. back then, a year might actually mean a week today. Who ever said people can't live that long?

  25. what proof do you have its not possible...i'm guessing because your mind isn't open and you are not a freethinker...

how old were these people when they died...

  26. Before Noah's Flood, it didn't rain. There was a canopy surrounding the Earth that protected it from the suns' damaging UV rays. This also contributed to mankinds' seemingly unnaturally long lifespans during that time, as well as accounting for the large sizes found in both plants & animals from then.

  27. They got it from traveling around, trading, and hearing from other cultures about life and death.  Stories got told and retold.  It has always been in human nature to ask why.  Religion tries to tell us why, and set up punishments for not agreeing with their interpretation.

  28. Let it never be said that the internet is a respectful forum.

Yes, this does come from the scripture.  But I'm fairly sure that the reason it can be found in scripture is based on a non-Gregorian calendar.  There's been lots of fiddling with days and things to come up with the current method of chronology.  Time itself being a convenient lie we all agree upon anyway.

  29. The magical firmament made it so humans could live long, long lives...

and because they had to keep a record of genealogy...  and couldn't account for the years in between...  so they lengthened the lives of those they DID know about.

  30. From a fundamental interpretation of the bible, and the refusal to admit the possibility of the bible being metaphorical.

  31. From God's word,  the Holy Bible.

    Adam 930

    Seth 912

    Cainan 910

    Jared 962

    Methusaleh 969

    Noah 950.
