Haase/Mayer overcome Istomin/Moser in doubles opening round – Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel 2011
The unseeded Dutch-German duo of Robin Haase and Florian Mayer faced less difficulty in disposing of the combination of Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan and Frank Moser of Germany in the opening round of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel
on Tuesday evening.
Haase and Mayer took just one hour and ten minutes of play to wrap up victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, earning a place in the quarter-final rounds of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event in a convincing
fashion.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, with Haase and Mayer exhibiting a brilliant show of dominance over their opponents. Istomin and Moser failed to pose any serious challenge
to the belligerence of their opponents and gave them an easy path to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The Dutch-German duo beat their opponents in every segment of the game and never allowed them to come top. Istomin and Moser converted two break points in the matchup, while suffered four out of nine crushing breaks of serve from
Haase and Mayer to finish the contest on the losing side.
The winning pair developed great coordination between them and kept the games short and professional to cruise through the two sets with commanding ease. Haase and Mayer delivered 67 per cent of their serve on target and secured
26 out of 34 first serve points en route to victory. They had their first break through of the match in the third game, when they broke Istomin and Moser to lead 3-1 early. Haase and Mayer dropped their serve in the sixth game but retaliated immediately to
snatch back their advantage in the very next game and went on to close out the first set at 6-4.
Istomin and Moser had an excellent start in the next set, breaking their opponents’ serve in the second game to race away to 3-0 but failed to sustain their momentum in the set. Haase and Mayer nailed two cracking serve breaks,
one in the seventh and the other in the ninth game, to close out the contest at 6-4, getting through to the quarter-final draw.
Haase and Mayer will either take on the second seeded pair of Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Daniel Nestor of Canada, or the British duo of Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, in the next round to fight for a place in the semis of Davidoff
Swiss Indoors Basel.
