For pilots prone to motion sickness, how long did it take you to habituate to flying? Especially a smaller plane. Please include the age at which you learned to fly with you answer.

  1. I started taking lessons in a 150 when I was twenty.  The first flight only lasted about 20 minutes because I started to get airsick.  Each succeeding flight lasted about 15 minutes longer until it just didn't bother me at all no matter how long the flight lasted.

I didn't finish my license then, but picked it up again when I was about twenty-five.  It started all over again in the 152 and took about the same amount of time to get used to it.

What I noticed though, is that sometimes when a friend is in the right hand seat and doing the flying, light chop will make me nauseous again.  The solution is to trade off on the controls with each other.  The airsickness goes away quickly when you're in direct control of the airplane.

When I fly solo I find it convenient to fly in very bumpy thermals along the road to get the extra lift from the thermals.  It doesn't bother me at all.

You'll get used to it, but not everyone is the same.  Some people never get airsick and other people will need more time.  Quit worrying and go fly - but take a barf bag until you know you don't need it anymore.

  2. Try using the relief band. it works as advertised!!

You will eventually get used to the motion with out the bad effects, some, sooner than others.
