It is very likely that you don't need to wipe your whole computer I don't think Hacitlaw really knew that for certain, it is also quite likely that you don't have a virus though there is nowhere near enough information for anyone to know this yet. Hacitlaw definitely wouldn't be able to tell based on your description that he had the same virus you had and to be honest if he thinks he can, I wouldn't be surprised to find that he didn't have one either and just 'cleaned out' his computer for nothing.

Post as an edit, what it was you were working on forever that doesn't work. What specifically on your computer does and doesn't work (is it only when you're on the internet?) What ads you were trying to click on. What type of computer you're using, what sort of windows you are using (or is it Macintosh?) When the problem started and if you saw anything unusual that happened at the same time (like an error message)
