Hackney Horses?

I am going to start working with Hackney horses (not ponies) at my job.

Driving them and working them under saddle (They are all green under saddle).

I was just wondering if anyone has worked with them before and can tell me about the breed.

Their temperaments etc.

  1. Well my favorite performance cross for English Pleasure and Park is the Hackney Arabian cross  All I can say is yeee haw. The funnest horses in the world to show! There is A huge learning curve to gaited horses and is not a novice or beginner horse to learn on. You are just asking for trouble going into this with no experience. You need a mentor or experienced trainer who is willing to help you proceed correctly and safely. If you do this, two things will happen, you will get hurt or you will ruin these horses. Please seek pro help.

  2. the ones ive worked with were a bit like arabs (a little hiper)

  3. Well..have you watched them work??  How would you accept a position and not know what you are getting into or what is expected of you?

These are hyper guys, alert and very brave... they can be fine harness, pleasure or road horses..that fly around the ring doing a very very fast road gait...not to mention the same under saddle where you go soooo fast you can't even post to it but yet you have to be able to sit it!!  Plus they can be shod in such a way to have alot of motion.  It is so much fun to watch.  I ride Saddlebreds..3 and 5 gaited..and these guys show at our shows...it is unbelievable the speed they have and the drivers and riders....in their stable silks!!  well, my courage to do that left me when I was no longer a teenager!!

Do you know what division they are going into?  Are they show horses?

And, to find out more about this or any other breed why don't you do some research??  What happened to taking an interest in something that you love,  and read..look at pictures..watch them on YouTube?  Perhaps you think the people that are capable of answering the majority of questions asked here are born with that knowledge but guess what...we learn because we take our interest in horses seriously and take the time to learn by reading, doing and yes, even asking questions. But the bottom line is that you are going to get out what you put into something, and not just you , but many of the questions that are asked here are because someone is too lazy to do their own homework and learn something because they can just post a question and pray it is answered by someone who knows or cares.  I have so many books on horses and their care, and I never tire of flipping through them over and over again. The internet has made researching and learning so much easier too. As well as asking questions to knowledgeable horsemen and women...You people would learn alot more if you would put your own time and energy into researching answers to your questions.  Trust me, it works!!

Learning can be fun...stop trying to find the easy way out!!

And the majority of you need to learn how to spell..the laziness is so evident in the grammar, puncuation (or lack thereof), spelling, if you can't write intellegently or are not embarrassed at the way your posts look...shame on you..you need to be back in the classroom and not the barn.

Additionally, some of the answers here are so incorrect...and so many of you wouldn't even know it...

Sorry about the rant..it wasn't meant directly at you but some of what is asked on this site is really silly.

  4. Hackney horses are very high energy. Most likely, yours will be spooky and timid.

Horses are natural born cowards, and I believe Hackneys make it at the top. They are wonderful horses, but beware, they are very, very impressionable.

They will remember what happens, especially when you make mistakes. I work with 3 green Hackney Ponies, 2 geldings one stallions, and they are the horse in a pony body.

Our Hackney horse gelding though is much easier to work with, but still timid and slightly jumpy.

Be careful about your impressions on them. They are lasting.

  5. i dont have the slitest, but i will say the ponies i have ever have worked with i used small sand bags before i put a saddles on them if they were real green,
