On Monday when released from the hospital I was told that I would have bowl movements begging by Wednesday and if not take stool softener well I haven't went p**p since last Friday due to the Hernia and another problem. Bleeding instead of pooping is no longer once surgery was done. I eat everything that could make me goto the restroom and still nothing been 6 days and on Monday I have a followup and I see a GI doctor for a Colonoscopy cause before I had this hernia all last week I been throwing up, diarrhea every 30 minutes and lots of blood came out from my p**p only for about 2 days but that been ongoing every 30 minutes but now ever since late Friday I can't go even after eating? Is this normal to happen? I mean no p**p in 6 days but I do go pee. Also should I seek a doctor or wait till Monday for my followup and see?

  1. Call your doctor. It could be because of the drugs (pain medications make you constipated), but when they do surgery you are now at risk of developing an ilius.

An ilius is either an obstruction of the intestines, either a mechanical obstruction (scaring from the surgery) or a physiological obstruction (they just stopped working). Either way, the surgeon will probably want to do an xray to make sure you don't have an ilius.

Your surgeon will probably do one of four things:

    1) Tell you to cut back on the pain medications

    2) Take a laxative

    3) Go for some sort of xray

    4) Wait and see

You really need to call your physician, just to see what he/she wants you to do. If it is an ilius it needs to be taken care of asap because you don't want the intestines to start to die.

MOST LIKELY- it is just because of the PAIN MEDICATION (especially percocet)

  2. It may be your pain medication constipating you.  Opiates do that.

    In any case, CALLYOUR SURGEON.

  3. Call your surgeon. He or she probably doesn't want you to strain hard when having a BM. A Fleet e***a sounds reasonable, BUT ONLY AT THE ADVICE OF YOUR PERSONAL DOCTOR.
