Haeji Kang all smile after a solid Safeway Classic finish
South Korean Haeji Kang was not among the hot favourite contenders for the Safeway Classic 2012, but she had a big smile on her face when she finally capped off the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association)
tournament in grand style.
Kang might not have clinched a victory at the Safeway Classic 2012, held at Pumpkin Ridge’s Ghost Creek Course, United States, but she proved her mettle in the final round by shooting a six-under 66.
Kang’s performance remained consistent throughout the three days of the tournament as she capitalised on good conditions on the course and favourable weather.
The South Korean star carded an overall score of 206 — just three strokes behind the leader Mika Miyazato of Japan. Kang finished tied for the fourth position along with Cristie Kerr of the United States and
fellow South Korean So Yeon Ryu.
The young LPGA star kicked off the third round with heaps of confidence and surprised her fans by draining a birdie on the first hole. She then parred the next three holes and sent the crowd cheering once again
after she reeled off three straight birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh hole. She completed her front nine by birdying the ninth hole.
On the back nine, Kang looked a little rattled as she missed several good chances, making lousy putts. She carded birdies on the 10th and 16th, but faltered on the 17th and ended up recording
a double bogey. Regaining her composure on the next hole, she drained yet another birdie.
Analysts said that the young golfer has proved her worth by scoring well in the final round of Safeway Classic 2012. They said that the South Korean star could have finished even better if she had not messed
up her score on 17th hole.
Kang, who appeared thrilled after finishing the tournament in impressive style, expressed confidence in her game while speaking to the media at the end of the tournament.
“I was hitting my drives perfectly and especially my irons were great, so I hit it close enough to get a lot of many chances out there. Obviously, my putter worked great, so it was my day,” Kang said.
