The great Argentine - Versus - The Marvellous One (15 rounds)

Any thoughts as to the victor?

I was thinking Hagler by decision.

  1. this is a really difficult one to answer, despite the fact that i answered it a few times before, and i always pick monzon by split decision...not sure why, i just think monzon might have ever so slightly edged it.

  2. This is not an easy fight to call.  Monzon didn't have many weaknesses at 160.  He was a tall stand-up boxer.  Hagler had an early loss to Willie Monroe,  a Monzon-type fighter.  Hagler was young at the time and had not learned how to deal with tall lanky fighters.  He was not a big middleweight.

Many people think Hagler was a SOLID KO  Puncher.  This is because he finished Hearns in only 3 rounds.  Part of that was due to the way Hearns chose to fight.  Marvin forced the fight because he was smart enough to know it was the only way he could beat Hearns.  Hearns doesn't have the chin of Monzon, nor the ability to take punishment to the body.  He certainly does not have the legs of Monzon.

Hearns was a great OFFENSIVE fighter.  If you take away his defense  you can beat him.  That's what Marvin did.   He would not have such an easy time against Monzon.

Monzon would make it an ugly fight.   He would tie Marvin up everytime he tried to come in.  Marvin would learn before the middle rounds, that he has to press the action.  He would not have much success in out-boxing Monzon.  He would befuddle Carlos early on but Carlos would keep a safe distance and not allow Marvin to get inside.  Hagler would leave himself open quite often in the early going.

Marvin Hagler is one of the most disciplined boxers ever.  He can stick to a game plan very well.  The one problem he has sometimes is that he can not always CHANGE plans if he has to.  Marvin LOST his fight to Leonard.  Leonard didn't WIN it.  Marvin allowed Ray to get in his head before the fight.  Monzon won't do the things Ray did but he can take Marvin out of his game.

Marvin would press the action in the middle rounds.  He would hurt Monzon and nearly put him down.  The problem is that Monzon would survive and coast in the later rounds, being careful not to allow Marvin in close.  Marvin will have given away many of the early rounds.  He would grind Monzon down in the letter rounds and catch up on points.

It's a close one with Marvin again nearly putting Carlos on the matt.  He falls short of this accomplishment.  The decision is not a popular one.

    Monzon by split decision

  3. marvin hagler ud15 carlos monzon !!!

  4. This question was just recently asked, and it certainly is a fantastic match-up.

I think Monzon could conceivably pull out a 12-round decision if he built up and early lead on the cards and managed to evade Hagler (or, as some might put it, run from Hagler) for the last four rounds.

But if you're talking a 15-rounder, Hagler's non-stop pressure would get to Monzon (think Margarito-Cotto, except with Hagler landing more clean shots and cutting off the ring much better than Margarito did). Hagler would sweep the later rounds and win a close decision, or possibly even stop Monzon in 14 or 15.

God, how I miss those 15-rounders.

  5. hagler in 10th

  6.   I would love to see this match up! Monzon was a very aggressive boxer but he knew how to use his height! I think he would have given Hagler problems... unless he decides to go into an all out slugfest like Hearns did I pick Monzon by split decision.

  7. Hagler is the greatest middleweight of all-time.  He lost the questionable decision to Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987,  his last loss before that was 1976.   So most of us never saw him lose & he had a questionable draw in there to Vito Antifermo.  I never saw him hurt or even staggered & he fought some big time punchers Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, John the beast Mugabi & none of those guys even came close to putting him anywhere near the canvas.   Hagler would have won this fight & probably by tko in the 13th round.

  8. it would have been a war with neither giving an inch.I tend to think of hagler as the best p4p middleweight ever as he was my era and one of my all time favourites..but some how I think he might have had too much bravery and self belief to not get hurt in this one..quicker than monzon and liked to land a lot of leather but in the proccess would get nailed many times..hagler on points or monzon ko..a dream fight..

  9. Two of the greatest middleweight champs of all time.  Hagler had a chin of iron and was a very hard puncher.  Monzon was tall for a middleweiht standing about 6' tall with a pole ax jab and great right hand.  This would have been a close fight and an exciting one.  Too close to cal so I say it's a draw after 15 rounds.
