  1. i believe ray won that fight.

  2. Ditto what Peter H said, it's exactly the same as my argument.

The only way to defend Hagler in losing this decision is that if you judged the fight as 1 round 36 minutes long, the fight is a draw.  But when it comes to 12 3-minute rounds, Ray wins due to Marvin's slow start.  Ray won the fight.  The judge that had Ray winning 7-5 said that Rays punches landed crisper and the audible thuds were a lot louder.

  3. Ray moved because Hagler was chasing him.  I am pressed for time, but if this question stays posted long enough, I will return and finish this answer with a more in depth response.  I will always believe Hagler got robbed and Ray got a gift.

  4. okay, the continuing debate on this one is half past silly.  ray won the fight before the first bell was even rung.  he got the gloves he wanted, the ring he wanted, the rounds he wanted, the purse he wanted, at the time he wanted.  he saw hagler's performance against john "the beast" mugabi and accurately perceived that marvelous was ripe for the taking after so many hard-fought wars.  even duran told leonard that he could beat hagler should they face each other.  boxing is always about styles and, at that time in his career, hagler had no way to catch, much less neutralize, ray.  did ray steal the rounds?  sure! did he dance and run when it suited him?  sure!  was it effective?  you bet ya!  leonard learned, after his first fight w/duran, to never fight an opponent's fight on an opponent's terms...fight your own fight, on your own terms.  to fight any other way would have been foolish and might've gotten ray knocked out - and ray's nobody's fool!  being one of the most intelligent fighters in history, he fought a flawless fight, tailor-made to defeat a great champion who probably only had a few more left in him anyways, confirmed by the fact hagler never laced up again.  as bitter a pill as it may have been(sorry to all the hagler fans of which i am one), every head must bow, every tongue must give credit to ray for the most masterful performance of his career, beating all the odds and stealing victory from the midst of almost certain defeat.  give the sugarman his due and lay this silly debate to rest once and for all!~

  5. He was more active than Hagler was.  Sometimes at the end of a round that could have went either way Leonard would throw a ton of punches & maybe only land a few but he was being active.  Hagler didn't show any panic at all.   When he knew the fight could have been stopped on cuts against Hearns he came forward & didn't care about getting hit & let everything go.  He never did that against Leonard & considering Hearns probably hits harder than Leonard that suprised me.   Leonard did win.

  6. I think Leonard did win that fight but in my opinion Hagler did not look like he was the Hagler of old. If you look at the fight when Leonard had him on the ropes it seemed Hagler wasn't throwing back any meaningful punches. I just have a feeling that something was not right in that fight. Did Hagler age all of a sudden ? Was Hagler actually hurt by some punches and did not want to throw back ? Was Leonard's speed to much ? Not sure ?

  7. Everytime I watch it the fight gets closer - I would have given the nod to the champ, but I don't completely disagree with the Ray winning.

He did box, land flurries, and his shots were enough to back Hagler up at times.  I'm a big Hagler fan, but I'm also a Ray Leonard fan - I think the harsh opinions of who won come from Hagler fans who simply didn't like Ray.

The arguments you get are pretty silly sometimes, "Ray moved too much?", so you can only legitimately beat Marvin if you fight him exactly how he wants?  "Ray didn't land any real punches, just 'pitter patter slaps'", if that were the case Hagler was more than good enough to just walk right through and KO him.  "Ring was too big, fight was too short", come on.

The fact was Hagler gave away the first 3-4 rounds trying to beat Leonard in a conventional boxing match, after that, I think Hagler was afraid of look too wild/bad against the stylish Ray Leonard - that still cheapens it though, it isn't fair to say Hagler just lost the fight, Leonard also won.

It was a very close and competitive fight, neither man went down, both could certainly make a good claim to at least 5-6 rounds.  It was high drama, good action, and pitted two of the best of all-time against one another.

  8. Leonard of course got in my opinion a debatable decision. Hagler was the champ and a great champion he was at middleweight. Leonard had been inactive since retiring through his detached retina (apart from one uninspiring comeback fight prior to Hagler) so to come back and even put up a show and make a fight of it against one of the last true champions says a lot. I have always been a Leonard fan for his skills as a boxer but I loved Hagler for his old pro style. Hagler had a killer instinct I admired when growing up but what happened against Leonard. Did he age? Maybe he just lost interest. He didnt look himself apart from the last 15 seconds of the bout. Hagler had he tried to chase Leonard, would and should have Ko'd a man who hadnt boxed seriously for approx 5 years. There will always be a "bad smell" about the fight but the history books will show that leonard got the nod through a bit of razzmatazz, dancing and being clever at catching the judges eye. Both at their prime and fighting at middleweight? I would take Hagler to win 8 times out of 10.

  9. What of course he won, people keep saying you gotta take the belt from the champion to win and that's exactly what leonard done. he may have ran some of the fight but he kept it entertaining and took all the pressure hagler sent his way. and not let us forget that leonard came out of retirement to beat a man no one thought was beatable and that's what make sugar 1 of  the best if not the best fighter since 1980. alot of people thought he should have kept his title since leonard ran but he was never hurt during the fight and he gave hagler all he could handle.
