Hair colouring! Opinions, suggestions, and tips please?

So, I am going to dye my hair, and I was wondering what you guys thought about my color options.

I might just dye it all black. It's simple, easy and effective. If I decided to dye it black, do you think I should do blue-black or jet black? I know blue-black is shinier and more natural, and jet black is a bit duller and better if you want to add streaks of colour. If I like how it looks when it is black, I probably will add some colour to it, but for now should I do blue-black so it looks shinier and more natural, or look ahead so I don't have to re-dye it if I like it?

I also might dye a nice brown under-layer and leave the very top layer blonde, maybe enhancing the blonde colour on top if it looks weird. (I have naturally blonde hair. It is also very long. And no, my hair isn't layered, that's not what I meant.) But I don't want to look like I am channeling Avril Lavigne if I do this. (I hadn't thought about this until this morning when it just came out of my mouth, but I think it makes sense to me now. :)) I think this will be a bit less of a shock because it's a softer change, but... I don't know. Is that good? (And if you don't know what I'm talking about - well, I don't know how to explain it. Just a soft brown underneath and blonde or maybe bleached on top, so that the brown shows through.) This will take longer to do and everything, but I don't really care. :) Still less foil than highlighting.

So, what do you think? Do you have any tips for me? My hair is naturally blonde and I will be using a semi-temporary or demi-permanent dye. (I'm not sure how long I want it to last for yet - it depends on what I do to it.) It is also very long. It's down to my hips right now, and I just cut several inches off to get rid of some of the damaged ends. And yes, my hair is pretty damaged - so do you have any tips for that? And I will also probably be getting a shorter cut soon, but for now my hair is still long. So what do you think? Any tips? Thanks for your suggestions and opinions!

Oh, and I would also say 'no comments please' about my choice to do this and everything, but I am actually asking for your honest opinion, so every nasty comment or attempt to put me off from doing this is definitely appreciated! That's what I'm asking for, your opinions!

  1. if your hair is damaged i wouldnt do anything to it.and if your gonna color it black, semi and demi permanent isnt gonna matter because if your hair is light, it will permanently stain it.

  2. 1. you need to learn about hair chemistry so you know exactly hat you are doing and getting into.

    great website:

    2. As for what colour, it depends on what will suit you. Are you naturally blonde/brunette?, pale or tanned?

3.If you ar naturally blonde jet black will not look good. It will make you look older

Dont do the avril thing, its soo lame...

dont get me started on how bad it looks.

    Try this:

    looks natural, subtle and nice.

Trust me you dont want to ruin your hair by dying it the wrong colour like black and wanting to go back to blonde or lighter and unfortunately ruining your hair.

Black is extremly difficult to get out of blonde hair. so dont do it.

  3. I have heard that hair coloring can actually damage your hair, and is a waste of money.  I suggest you stick with your natural color.

  4. I tried both blue- black and jet- black, and jet-black is definitely more natural.

I also think you shouldn't probably pick such a drastic color change, because it takes a while to get used to it, and if your pale it may give you a deceased look, If I were you I'd pick brown, or dark brown to start with.

  5. go for what your natural hair colour was as a child as that is what suits your skin best

  6. Well you seem to have a good idea of what you want. I hope you will go to a salon to do this since your hair is damaged as you say it will help that out some.  I don't know to much about working with blonde hair (as mine is really dark) but not sure if you can just "go black" in one stage, without it becoming muddy.  Depending on the blonde you have, (more platinum) I would advise the blue black (its for cooler tones)  and if you went wtih the demiperm/semi perm that can be lifted  to add another color later if you wanted (so I wouldn't worry so much about what you want to achieve later DEFINATELY ask a stylist about what you want for now and what you want for later, she/he might be able to recommend a better solution.

Black(jet) is a hard color to pull off, (i did it) and it looked like I had "painted my hair" it was pretty dull and washed me out.  Black/blue is still hard cause its sooo cool it makes you look funny unless you have just the right skin (like platinum blonde skin think christina aguleira)  but its fun.  but it will be hard to go back to light without hurting your hair. : (

As for the brown and blonde, sounds good and less drama and chance of it being "too much" all over.

  7. I think it depends on how old you are. If you are still in school then I would say more of the Avril Lavigne look. If you are naturally blonde, I don’t think black will look too good on you. I dyed my hair black once, the shiny black. Everyone said I looked like I was wearing a wig! And I have natural dark brown hair! It was horrible and it was really hard to get it lighter again. I would stay away from that, lol. Good Luck!

  8. if your skin coloring can handle black hair then I would suggest blue black just because I think it is a very beautiful color.

But make sure black goes with your skin coloring or you will end up looking like morticia addams

  9. Put vaseline on your forhead so if you get dye there it doesn't stick!!!!!

I deffo think if you've got naturally blonde hair you should steer away from the black, just because from my friends experiences, their skin tone hasn't suited black from being blonde.... Browns are generally more agreeable and i like the sound of your two tone thingys!!

    Good luck!!!

Just remember that if it goes wrong you can always grow it out!!!
