Half-life 2 loading problems???

Question

everytime i open half life 2 i go to new game and click on the first chapter, the screen will go black and it will say loading and show the bars, the loading will get up to about half way then my cursor will dissapear and the loading box will dissapear soon after and then my screen will be nothing but black, so i have to restart my computer. i have a hp with 200 gb memory. (it isnt the graphics because i can run call of duty 4 really well) i have windows xp and i think my RAM is 3 gb. i'm really confused. please help

I'm assuming you have the newest direct x drivers installed?  If you do or if you install them and it's still doing it then you need to reinstall or repair the half-life 2 installation.
