I'm on Windows Vista using Realtek HD Audio Manager. The speakers are made by Logitech, thats all I know.

We've been getting this humming noise coming from the speakers. I left my computer alone for 10 minutes. I come back to hear my dad cussing and swearing because he "Buggered something up". He assumed the humming was a software issue. So he's gone and done something to make only have the sound come out.

Seriously it sounds like every song is like being at an awful gig. Some of it echoes and it horribly distant, some of the electric guitar (as I listen to rock) plays crystal clear, then goes all fadey again.

What did he do? And how do I fix it?

PLEASE HELP I'M DOING A MUSIC A-LEVEL, I NEED TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO MUSIC!

  1. Check your Windows help center.

  2. Check the balance on the system. It may be turned to one chanel. Also the humming may be due to the speakers not being phased correctly. Phasing is when the speakers are wired identicaly so they go in and out togehter.

  3. Try plugging the speakers into an MP3 player or something to see if the fault lies in the computer or the speakers.

I reckon that it's the software EQ at fault here, and your dad has messed around with the settings.

Also make sure that a plug hasn't come halfway out, which would cause the humming as a ground loop is formed.

To the 1st guy - humming can in no way whatsoever be caused by incorrect phase. Symptoms of having one speaker out of phase will be messed up imaging and very little bass as phase cancellation takes place. It sounds kind of like you have a stuffy cold.
