Hallucinating, hearing bizarre things due to lack of sleep?

OK, so once I went to bed at around 3 AM. As I began to fall asleep (in the dark), my mind forms weird shapes with shadows (kinda hard to explain). And then, I began to "hear" laughter echoing in my head. It became intense, and my mind felt like it was buzzing. It made me scared so I made myself snap out of it.

Is this normal? Do things like this ever happen to you night owls out there?

And it's happened more than once.

  1. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, try not doing too much before going to bed.  Watch TV,read, or something not computer work, games, surfing the net, etc..  Experienced only slight effects of hearing a hollar or two when staying up late night after night and stressed for a long period of time.

    Other suggestions:

Try to get some exercise during the day.

Find some meditation/relaxation CD to play while falling asleep.

Hope that helps and don't be afraid to ask for help to nip it in the butt sooner than later.

  2. Those are called Hypnagogic Hallucinations. They are common and normal, one of the causes is sleep deprivation. http://neurology.health-cares.net/hypnag...

Albert Einstein used to hold rocks in his hands and have pots next to him.and when he would get too far into sleep(leaving the rem state)his hands would fall and the rocks would hit the pots and wake him up.so he stayed on a more minimal level of sleep, and he was better able to have deeper thoughts.

  6. If you are talking about the middle state between being awake and asleep, all types of weird things happen there.  It's normal and you are not alone.
