343 Industries and Microsoft seem extremely confident that Halo 4 can compete with the next Call of Duty title as they are set to release their game in the same window.
There was a time when the Halo series, developed by Bungie, used to set all the records in the video game industry. Halo 2 and Halo 3’s sales figures demonstrated exactly how the series was the biggest of its time.
Then however, Infinity Ward came up with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a game which transformed the landscape of video games and popular culture as well.
Halo games became fewer and far between with Halo ODST and Halo: Reach, an expansion and a prequel, the last two games of the series to be released before Bungie wrapped things up and decided to move on to pastures new.
At the same time, Activision’s Call of Duty series cemented its place as the best-selling franchise in the history of gaming; easily surpassing Halo’s previously set targets.
However, not long after Bungie sold the rights of the Halo series to Microsoft did the publisher hire 343 Industries for another trilogy in the same universe. The announcement was met with as much scepticism as excitement as many wondered if the new developer
could ever recreate the immersion of the earlier games.
Almost as if to demonstrate their confidence in the return of Master Chief to the world of gaming, the publisher has decided to release the game around the same time as Activision will be releasing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
Microsoft announced that Halo 4 has been given a worldwide release date for the 6th of November.
Phil Spencer, the corporate vice president at Microsoft Studios, added a bit more hype to the news when he said, “We are beginning a new saga with Halo 4 and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of Halo games and experiences.”
He continued, "Millions of fans worldwide have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to step back into the boots of Master Chief, and with Halo 4 leading the charge, we're confident 2012 will be the most successful year in Xbox history."
