I am very curious about everything I would need to start using a ham radio from equipment to licencing. Can someone tell me all of the procedures, costs and places where I can buy the equipment? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

  1. After you take a look at the 3 excellent links given above^, you can drool over some of the latest equiptment here:

Just remember that an HF radio will be used for long-distance world wide (DX) communication and VHF and UHF radios are basically used for local communications.

  2. Best place to start might be the amateur radio relay league.

  3. Don't put the cart before the horse here.

You will be requiring  a license before you think about radios and talking to people.

Follow the steps correctly . study for the exams , pass them , and then go buy your equipment.

After certification you will then deserve the rite to use the equipment.

Don't be tempted to use ham radios without being certified , the up to $10,000 fine , and then being refused to get a license after that isn't worth the risk.

Find  a ham radio buddy in your area and ask him to help you through the licensing steps.

  4. http://www.hello-radio.org/whatis.html is a good place to start.

Among the best ways is to find a local ham club. They can direct to the people you need to meet. They often run regular classes about getting into ham radio.

Licenses are as easy to get now as ever.

Equipment costs are entirely up to you. Modern radios range from a few hundred dollars (US) to thousands.
