If you were on a tight schedule wich city would you skip?

I'm backpacking Europe and will be passing by Germany, where I'm planning to spend about 7 days.

I'm heading from Copenhagen to Salzburg.

  5. skip Hamburg...

  6. Sounds like you are going to have a good time!

Here is the skinny on all of the locations:

HAMBURG:  Hamburg is the seat of popular culture in Germany.  Many of the pop-TV stations broadcast from Hamburg, and it has a great club scene.  There is nothing really scenic like mountains in Hamburg, but the waterfront is really nice, and I have certainly had my share of fun there.

BERLIN:  The new 1st city of Germany.  Since reunification, Berlin has become one of the cultural capitals of Europe, not the mention the political capital of a unified Germany.  There is so much COOL history here, and TONS to see.  Great restaurants, great clubs, great museums, h**l...Berlin has great everything.  It is also really easy to get around in.

MUNICH:  Munich has a lot of things we would traditionally associate with Germany.  Think beer halls, the Hofbräuhaus, girls in a dirndl, etc.  It is scenically very beautiful and is located close to the mountains, and similar in nightlife to Hamburg.

DRESDEN:  Dresden is one the most renewed cities in Germany.  They have just completed the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche, and it is stunning.  The historical center of the city is unbeliveable, and the surrounding area has a lot to offer.  The nightlife is quiet, however.

All of the cities are great to see, but if timing is a concern...Hamburg, Berlin, Munich have the best high speed train connections.  Dresden is out of the way.  It's a shame, as Dresden is my 2nd favorite city in Germany.

You didn't mention Leipzig, though...my Number 1 choice in the country!  It is on the same rail line from Hamburg to Berlin to Munich, and is definitely worth a stop.

    Good luck!

  7. That's a hard one. I'd skip Munich, simply becuse the other three are definitely unskippable. And if you want to hear people talk with a funny dialect - well, you're still going to Salzburg :o)

  8. Dresden is most out of your way, but skipable, no.

Salzburg is great.  Lived there for 6 years.  ~
