Rafael Van Der Vaart be on his way to Hamburg. The Spurs attacker has been constantly linked with a move to former club Hamburg and it looks like he could be on his way out of White Hart Lane this summer.
This news might have come as a shock to many, as Van Der Vaart himself fuelled speculation regarding his future as a Tottenham player when he revealed that he still loved his former club. The Dutch start had spent three years with the Bundesliga outfit before
he signed for Real Madrid in 2008.
Van Der Vaart scored 29 goals in 74 appearances for the German outfit, helping the side to two Intertoto Cup titles. He is considered a club legend by many of Hamburg’s supporters.
Van Der Vaart spoke to a German newspaper in June and was quoted to have said:
'I am happy and I am surprised myself how much I still love Hamburg, currently however there is no contact.'
'I spent three years living in Hamburg and had a wonderful time at HSV. My wife Sylvie works there and we have many friends who live in your country. In football you never know.'
This may have worried a lot of Tottenham supporters, who already consider the Dutch midfielder a cult hero. Van Der Vaart scored 13 goals for Tottenham last season and proved to be one of their key players.
Yesterday, Hamburg revealed their interest in re-signing the player from Tottenham. The club has fallen on hard times ever since Van Der Vaart left for Madrid, but have made the acquisition of their former player a major priority this summer. Long-term investor
Klaus-Michael Kuehne has publicly stated his appreciation for Van Der Vaart and said that there is a possibility of bringing him back to the Bundesliga.
As of now, Van Der Vaart waits on talks with new Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas and will be hoping to discover his part in the club’s revival under the Portuguese manager.
Last season Van Der Vaart was often being played on the wings and asked to defend and cover for his full-backs – something the player did not appreciate. Many believed he was going to leave White Hart Lane in the summer.
Nonetheless, time will tell what colours the player puts on next season.
