Hamburg striker Mladen Petric insists his side needs to improve before facing Dortmund
Hamburg SV striker has insisted that his side needs to improve ahead of the clash against German champions Borussia Dortmund, after a disappointing performance in the DFB Pokal. He claimed that the team cannot play in the Bundesliga
like it did against minnows VfB Oldenburg in the German Cup competition.
Rothosen won 2-1 against Oldenburg in the first round clash played at the Marschweg Stadium in Oldenburg as Petric scored the winner in the dying moments of the match. The Red Shorts avoided a shock exit and were able to hang on
to the lead to progress to the second round.
Petric claimed that it was a warning for the team before the start of the Bundesliga season on Friday. He stated that the team has to step up and perform better and insisted that performances like these will make it difficult for
the side if they face teams of the class of Borussia Dortmund.
The striker rued missed opportunities and admitted that Hamburg were below par and failed to create chances. He added that the defence was sloppy and his team conceded a goal which could have been avoided.
“That was a genuine warning before Dortmund. We made life far too difficult for ourselves. We had our work cut out against them, and failed to create enough space, and we allowed them too many chances,” he was quoted as saying
in an interview.
The player warned Hamburg that his former club have a very attacking style of play and that it will be a huge test on Friday when the two sides play the League opener.
“We have a lot of improving to do ahead of our game against Dortmund. They play quick attacking football, so we can expect a lot of that coming our way on Friday night,” he concluded.
