Hamilton, Alonso concede 2011 championship battle to Vettel – Formula 1 news
Two of the biggest rivals of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in the 2011 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, have stated that their championship battle is over against the German.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, 99 points behind Vettel in the drivers’ championship, stated that the German is almost out of reach of the struggling Ferrari. The Spaniard finished second in the European Grand Prix but Vettel’s another pole-to-win performance
has now opened up a gap of 77 points to the second driver on the table, McLaren’s Jenson Button.
On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton stated that for McLaren, the championship battle is over already after just eight rounds of the season.
Alonso said, “The championship is not in our calculations. If anyone thinks we can win the championship being eight-tenths of a second behind [Red Bull] they don't understand Formula 1.”
On the other hand, Hamilton conceded, “It's finished really. In the sense of the title it's almost over already. We've taken a step back this weekend - or maybe the others have gone forward, I think we're quite a bit down in downforce. I'm really not looking
forward to Silverstone. Ferrari are a lot faster than us and the Red Bulls are on another planet.”
Vettel has now won six of the eight grands prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season while he finished second in the other two. The German has also taken seven out of eight pole positions of the championship whereas both McLaren and Ferrari have struggled in qualifiers
as well as in the race.
Both Alonso and Hamilton have one less race finish as both crashed out once in the 2011 season.
Eleven races are still to be contested in the season but it will become exciting from the next Silverstone Grand Prix when Red Bull’s Blown Diffuser will be clamped down.
On the other hand, Vettel cited the example of the 2010 season and stated that 2011 is far from over.
Nevertheless, the Silverstone Grand Prix on July 10, 2011 will decide the future of McLaren or Ferrari against the roaring Red Bull.
