for my school assignment we have to choose a movie to make a comparison between it and shakespere's hamlet, i am wondering if choosing hannibal rising would be a good idea, or are there any better movies you could think of? I think i will be able to link the two texts on the basis of a revenge/tragedy and using the 5 act summary, Is this a good Idea?

  1. you could definately make it work and i think it would be interesting. my only argument is that (and forgive me for i have NOT seen hannibal rising) hamlet is one of those characters that is affected by his environment. his path was affected by what other characters did to him. and because of what choices they made, in combination with hamlet's pride, made him choose the path he did. hannibal lecture (once again if this is terribly wrong i apologize) seems fated to be a murderer. even if he didn't experience the things he did as a child/young adult, would his path have not included murder? i feel that's where the two men differ. if my assumption is correct, then find another man, maybe even in the context of a hero, whose environment and choices, lead him in a completely different direction than he would have ever gone down had they been the opposite.

the one guy that popped into my head was Batman...if his parents had never been murdered, his path, as a vigilante, would not exist. and that character has frequently, especially now with the contemporary direction the series has taken movie wise, taken a "darker" path. even in the comic books, he readily admits that his choices are his choices, not the choices of a hero. hope this helps or solidifies your original theory even more.
