Hampshire and Somerset to play in Caribbean T20
Friends Provident t20 finalists http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 and Somerset will participate in the Caribbean T20 in January.
Hampshire won this summer’s nail-biting final at the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rose-c86842 Bowl as a result of losing fewer wickets in their innings after both teams finished with a total of 173 runs from their 20 overs.
Now both will have the chance for a competitive hit-out during the English winter as they head to warmer climes for a fortnight of cricket.
The local teams in the competition will be the inaugural winners of the tournament, Guyana, as well as Barbados, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, Windward Islands, and Combined Campuses & Colleges.
Hampshire and Somerset did not join domestic sides from the IPL, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in September’s Champions League Twenty20 competition – which clashed with the conclusion of England’s domestic season, but now have the chance to face some overseas opposition.
“The Caribbean T20 rewards Hampshire Royals and Somerset for their hard work throughout the 2010 Friends Provident t20 campaign and provides an excellent opportunity for both teams to experience playing in a different environment and test themselves against strong opposition,” the ECB’s director of marketing & communications Steve Elworthy said in a media release.
For his part, Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove described the tournament as “a great opportunity for the Hampshire Royals squad to reconvene and play some high-quality cricket over the winter months.”
The first round of matches in the Caribbean competition, which runs from for the January 10th to 23rd, will be held at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua, with the concluding stages of the competition set to take place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
