Hampshire v Worcestershire: County Championship Division One – Hampshire’s Second Innings
Worcestershire ended up with a 25-run first innings lead against Hampshire in a match of the County Championship Division One at The Rose Bowl, Southampton in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Thursday, August 25, 2011.
However, rain did not allow the match to finish in a result. Plenty of overs were lost due to the bad weather and as a result, the match ended in a draw.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 were in deep trouble before close of play on day-three. The team had lost six wickets for just 78 runs on the board. However, only 34 overs were bowled in the day and the hosts had to survive the final day’s play in order to save the match.
The fourth day also saw plenty of rain, which did not allow both teams to complete the minimum number of overs to be bowled. Luckily for Hampshire, the ball did not do a lot off the pitch and the team ended the day at 157/6.
The highest scorer of the innings for the hosts was yet again http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Wood-c1254. He came in at a very difficult time, but held his nerves to score an unbeaten 56 runs. His effort helped the team to draw the game, which could have ended up in Hampshire’s loss.
Batting was not easy throughout the entire four days of the game. The pitch was under cover for most part of the match due to rain. This kept the moisture locked in the surface and the bowlers took maximum advantage of the conditions.
Hampshire’s openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MA-Carberry-c1868 tried to be cautious at the start of the innings. Their defensive approach did not pay many dividends, as the former was sent back to the pavilion after adding 11 runs to the total.
Carberry also failed to make an impression, as he was dismissed after collecting just 6 runs off 30 deliveries. He was followed by South Africa’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neil-McKenzie-c2094, who managed just 4 runs in his short stay at the crease.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Vince-c1657 tried to be aggressive, as he smashed four boundaries for his 16 runs. He did not last long though and was the fourth wicket to fall in the innings.
Zimbabwe’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nic-Pothas-c2100, who contributed 16 runs to the total.
The hosts were in deep trouble, losing 6 wickets for 78 runs. However, thanks to the rain and an unbeaten seventh wicket partnership of 79 between Wood and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mascarenhas-c912 ended the match in a draw.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wood-c98110 remained unbeaten on 56 with the help of seven boundaries whereas Mascarenhas collected 25 runs in his defensive knock.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866’s Gareth Andrew picked up three wickets in the innings.
