Hampshire v Worcestershire: County Championship Division One – Worcestershire’s First Innings
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
Although the first day’s play was washed out due to rain, this was a very good opportunity for the Worcestershire batsmen to take a solid first innings lead and pressurise the opposition.
Hampshire’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dominic-Cork-c1390 would have been terribly disappointed after his side’s dismal show in the first innings, especially after the team elected to bat first at the toss.
None of the hosts’ batsman even managed to reach the forties, as the highest score of the innings was 36, which came off the bat of lower-order player http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Wood-c1254.
The pitch remained good for the bowlers, as the ball was doing quite a lot of tricks off the wicket. However, batting had still eased out a lot compared to the first innings, which allowed the visitors to get off to a solid start.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Cameron-c65525. The pair put together 68 runs for the first wicket partnership, playing steadily at the top of the order.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-c76390 was unable to make most of the start he got to his innings and was dismissed after adding 35 runs to the total. He took his time to settle down and would have been disappointed not to convert his start into a big one.
The innings was carried forward by Cameron and former England batsman Vikram Solanki. The pair batted extremely well, collecting 67 runs for the second wicket partnership before the former was dismissed after scoring 48 runs.
This saw a collapse for the team, as wickets started falling at regular intervals. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Kervezee-c1027 followed after scoring a duck.
The next two wickets to fall were http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aneesh-Kapil-c44658 and Gareth Andrew. Both players scored 1 run each in their respective outings.
Worcestershire had lost 5 wickets in a span of just 6 runs, which turned the situation of the match dramatically.
However, Solanki and wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ben-Scott-c1140 collected 43 runs for the seventh wicket partnership, guiding the team out of trouble. The latter was sent back to the pavilion after adding 11 runs to the total.
Wickets kept on tumbling and the visitors’ innings came to an end at 204. Solanki played a valiant knock of 79 runs and remained unbeaten until the end. He struck 11 boundaries in his classy outing.
South Africa’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-c64193 Tahir was the pick of the bowlers for Hampshire, as he took a five-wicket haul. The wily leg-spinner guided his side out of trouble with his excellent figures.
