I've had a male hamster (Moley) for over 3 months just after christmas and i bought him a rotastack fun fair cage and found after he grew from a baby he has become too big for his cage so i have bought him a new one called the Crittertrail 3 but over the past few days his behavior has changed completely from being nice and calm to being startled and scared. Every time i move to the cage or make a sound he startles and runs in his pipes and now hes spending loads more time in his bed and the only time he does come out is at night for food and water, will this behavior continue or will it get better?

can anyone give me any ideas what i can do?

  1. It will continue to get better. When I got a new cage for my hamster she wasn't too sure about all this but after about a week she settled in fine into her new cage. And try calming him down if he gets startled and scared. Remind him that there's nothing to be frightened about. It also might be the scent of the cage. New things normally come with particular smell. So he may need to get things to just his smell before he settles in. Good luck :)

  2. He will get better soon. Your hamster is just feeling different in his new set up. Hamsters are creatures of habit and always take some time to get used anything new in their lifestyle.Just give him some time and he should relax and get used to his new life style in his new cage. He would be lethargic for a few days but soon start discovering the new cage and getting used to it. In the mean time, try to exercise him for 20 mins in the hamster ball everyday to compensate for his lack of activity and pet him whenever you can so that he gets over the "new" and "strange" feeling in the cage soon.

  3. its just because he needs to get used to a new cage. hes so used to his old cage that he actually feels scared in this one. my hamster didn't even play in his new cage, so we had to put him in his old one. since hamsters r used to playing the way they did in their old cages, its hard to play in new ones. try just giving him time to get used to it, and calmly talk to him sometimes. dont try to grab him, but instead let him come to u. feed him some fruits and vegis is and make the new cage feel like home to him. dont rush him to play around alot, he  needs time to find his way around the new cage

  4. he just needs to get used to his new cage...i mean...its just like you moving to a new house...you need time to get used to it...he has the same feeling we do...   hope everything works out adn he's not scared no more... <33
