My hamster doesn't use one corner of his cage as a bathroom. He uses which ever corner he feels like! Is this normal?

  1. Your hamster is very very normal. Hamsters p**p in all parts of the cage and even in their own nest. There is a specific reason why they do this -

It sounds weird but hamsters eat their own p**p. It is not only normal but essential. Hamsters are very efficient with food and water. They eat their p**p to digest more nutrients from it that their bodies couldn't absorb the first time. Their p**p is actually an irreplaceable source of nutrition for them.

They make two kinds of p**p - one which they choose out to eat again, and one which is devoid of further nutrition. They often collect the reusable ones in the nest or food area. Please don't do anything to prevent it.

You can litter train the hamster but he will continue to choose another area for his p**p too for segregation sake due to the above mentioned reasons.

  2. Let him pee or p**p where he wants to and don't be bothered by this.  They have different places they do their stuff on.

  3. its normal, although it is possible to train hamsters to go in small litter tray

  4. I am sure it is fine. No need to worry. Sign up and post on a good hamster forum if you still are worried, they'll help you.

  5. This is actually better than using one specific corner of the cage, believe me! Some of my hamsters used to use only one corner for food, then one corner to go to the bathroom, and the cages were HORRIBLE trying to clean because the bedding ended up sticking to the cage because there was so much...erm, waste.... and it stunk extra bad.

You don't have to worry, it isn't a behavior problem or anything :)
