Hi,

I'm getting a hamster soon and I was wondering if I should get 2 Crittertrail minis with some tubes or a larger cage (Crittertrail 2) and $30 worth of tubes?

Any answer is appreciated!

  1. It does not really matter whether you get two smaller cages are one big one, as long as there is sufficient room for the hamster to move around and explore.

One thing you should definitely consider when getting purchasing plastic cages is cleaning. I've kept hamsters in these sort of plastic tube cages before, and WOW they were a pain to clean! You may be able to get away with only cleaning the main cage(s) weekly without having to deal the the tubes, but the hamster may track dirty or worse, relieve itself in the tubes, and you'll have to take them all apart to clean them, which is a huge hassle.

My advice would be to keep the amount of tubes to a minimum, whether you get the small or large cage, just to lower your workload in terms of cleaning. One or two little paths will be more than enough to keep the hamster happy.
