I need to know everything about a hamster. I have a related question about this but that didn't really tell much. I need to know when hamsters will give birth. (I'm probably getting either a syrian or a dwarf hamster), i also need to know if the male and female will actually MATE!, and i need to know what foods to feed it, what kind of cage to give it and toys for it to play with. i'm also wondering what to do if babies come and how to tell male from female. i also need to know how i can tell if its old or young. and what age a hamster should be when i buy one.

  1. Don't breed; there are too many unwanted hamsters that need homes. For foods, try a tablespoon of a commercial hamster seed mix, 1 lab pellet, and a few fresh fruits and vegtables. You should get a large wire cage for your hamster, these have good ventalation and are easy to clean. Make sure it is atleast 1x2x1 ft. I like this brand called Martin cages, though they have to be assembled. As for toys, my hamster loves his wheel, flying saucer, puzzel, chube, and snack shack log. Try to rotate toys when you clean the cage once a week so he doesn't get bored. The hamster should be 6-8 weeks when you buy him, this way he will be old enough to leave his mother and siblings but still easy to mold and tame.

  2. Leave breeding to the professionals please.

A littler of hamsters is a huge responsibility, then trying to find homes for them all becomes a challenge.

2 hamsters can quickly turn into 20, as they mature quickly and when so little its hard to tell the s*x, hard to seperate them and you get more pregnent females.

Do yourself a favor.  Get ONE hamster to start with. Teddy bears are more solitary, but like to be handled.

You will need a cage/aquarium, food dish, water bottle, little hut to sleep in, hamster pellet and a wheel for exercise.

I have had 3 hamsters in my lifetime and became attached to the teddybears.  They are very sweet and easy to care for, and require alot less work than a dog or cat.

  3. I know that for syrian hamsters the gestation period of the hamster is 16 days, and it is probably around the same as a dwarf hamster.

Here are a few good websites, that can tell you everything you need to know about caring for a hamster, and I hope they help you.

Also just something that I know personally, for hamsters, like most people know, for a toy, they need a wheel, it helps them to keep healthy and exercized.

    Hope I helped

    I'm only 12 so I guess I don't knwo much.
