Well the past few days, the heat has been unbearable... well for Washingtonians... it got to 90 degrees and I think my hamster has heat stroke!!!! His name is Nemo and he is a male long haired hamster. I was wondering what are the signs for heat stroke for hamsters and what are some ways to help them cope with the cruel, hot heat...

Thanks^^

  1. i dont know the signs but Get a tupper ware container that is small with a lid put water in it then freeze it and put it in with him or a jar and put it in the freezer and let him use it as a house

  2. Try turning the a/c up more.. or just give him really cold water. :] good luck, and I hope Nemo is okay!!

  3. I am not sure of the signs, but you can put a frozen water bottle in the cage to cool it down.

  4. He would be very lethargic, and wouldn't want to eat anything or drink anything. Keep him in the coolest room in the house. Make SURE he has plenty of water AND he is drinking it. If he doesn't drink it, put a little bit on his mouth so he can l**k it off. To cool him down more you can wet him with a damp, not too wet cloth. Just run it along him like you would if you pet him.

Wow 90 degrees, you are lucky, it gets to about 110 where I am :(

    Good luck :)

  5. I live near the DC area to! You should put him in theh coldest room you have then freeze his water then put it in the cage and it will be cold if he does not take it then pick him up and see if he wants some so put it in his mouth a little.

I hate heat especially when humid :[

    Good luck!

  6. Heat Stroke in hamsters (or Sleeper's Disease as it is sometimes known) occurs when the temperature is too high. The hamster lies flat on the cage floor, is limp and may tremble when touched.

A hamster should never be placed near a window or left in a closed area on a warm day as these are the most common cause heat stroke.

A hamster suffering from heat stroke may also become dehydrated.

Some ways to cope with the heat -

Barred cages are best for summer since they allow better ventilation than plastic box cages. Hence if Nemo is in a plastic box cage, you might consider moving him to a temporary barred cage.

Make sure there is lots of water in his cage. You can also feed him food with water in it like cucumbers but not too much as it may cause diarrheaa. The following website will help you in choosing the right water foods for your pet -

Put the cage in a cooler part of your house so that no direct heat affects the cage. Keep the place around the cage uncramped to ensure circulation. If you have a fan in the house, switch it on for air circulation but prevent the draft from directly entering the cage.

Keeping the cage in an air conditioned room is also a good option.

  7. Definitely DO NOT put a frozen water bottle under your rats cage for too long, it may freeze. The best thing do is always make sure your rat has plenty of water (change the water often as it heats up easily in this kind of weather) and feed her things like cold watermelon and cucumber that have water in it. Also use a fan as long as its not blowing directly on your rat.  Good luck!

  8. um one sign is laying limp in his cage and also you can get those  things you freeze and put in lunch boxes you could get a small one of those and put it in there sorry i didnt read the other answers so sorry if i repeted any answers and hope i helped
