Question:

Hamster cages - Which one!?

I have recently been granted permission from my parents to get a pet hamster. I have been searching on the internet at various sites for cages. I have found one cage that looks spacious enough. Here it is http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754666

If anyone knows of a cage, that is under 65 dollars please help me!

also I would like to know if I should get a girl teddy bear hamster, or a boy teddy bear hamster. I have been told that girls are more aggressive. Is this true? And I would also like to know if I should get Aspen bedding or Carefresh? I cant decide!

  1. well before you buy the cage i'd like to let you know that my sister has had 2 hamsters (at two different times) and i've had 3 hamsters, and at first we had cages similar to this with the tubes and everything, and they all figured out how to chew their way out of the tubes and escaped so that could also happen with your hamster so be very carefull and check it daily to make sure its not breaking.

also, some hamsters tend to hide in the tubes so you cant reach them, but if you're okay with that...

anywho, either kind of bedding is fine for hamsters i'd think, but isnt carefresh the kind that's gray and isnt a kind of woodchip?(bc if carefresh is the bedding that im thinking of i'd go for that kind bc its really easy to clean up, and just feels more comfortable to sit on for the hamster and it'll enjoy nesting with it more).

also, even though i'm not very experience with hamsters bc i havnt had any in years, i've found that the males were a little nicer but i think it depends on the individual ones and how theyre treated (and of course they are often a little crabby when they wake up and are more likely to bite if disturbed at the wrong time, but using common sense will avoid this)

  2. that cage looks really nice and is just perfect, go for that one, it is true that females are slightly more agressive but it is a small difference and they are both equally adorable, pick a name you really like if its a girls then get a girl if its a boy then get a boy that way you get a cute hammy and a great name lol, i'd go for carefresh aswell. good luck hope you love your new hammy weather its a boy or girl :D

  3. that caged looks spacious enough that will be perfect for your hammy........hmmmm i would say girl but i don't know if they are more aggressive.....i would probley choose carefresh bedding

  4. Believe it or not that cage is not good. Any cage with wire is bad. They can chew through or find a way to slip through and then they are out around the house. And I'm pretty sure your parents would not appreciate it. I would go with a cage that has plastic walls or even a tank that you can add a top too.

As for the gender. I have only ever had girl hamsters. I have a girl teddy bear hamster now and she is the sweetest think I ever seen. She lets me pet her and loves to be brushed with her hamster comb. I suggest you get a girl because I have never had problems with girls.

BTW do you have cats? If you do then a hamster cage is out of the question. You have to get a tank. Hamster cages practically weigh nothing and your other pets can knock them down and there goes hammy. Unfortunately I had a hamster who lost her life like that. I was at work and the cat knocked down the cage and killed her. Get a tank. You can put tunnels on the top and stuff. If you go to the pet store they will have all kinds of things to put on the top of you tank like tunnels.

    Good luck.

  5. Ok That Picture Of The Hamster Cage Looks More Than Spacious Enough ,,,,,,That Looks A Like A Lovely Cage For Your Hamster . ,,,,,mmmmmm I Would Say Carefresh . i would get a boy,,, i dunno bout hamsters but i know for guinea's girls are more aggressive and boys are much more gentle.

  6. I've had many hamsters over my lifetime, and I find the best cage to be a ten gallon glass aquarium with a mesh lid.  Hamsters like to chew [their teeth never stop growing] and will chew the bars and tubes on the cage pictured.  If you want to give the hamster a tube to crawl into, an empty toilet paper roll works great.  As for boy vs. girl, I don't think it matters as long as you're sure the girl isn't pregnant.  I prefer aspen shavings.  Despite what the makers of Carefresh say, I don't think it masks odor at all.  Do NOT use pine or cedar wood; it's bad for the hamster's respiratory system.

  7. this one is cool

  8. That cage is spacious, it seems good :)

Defiantly get a female if you don't want a bad odor, males tend to pee "marking" there territory. Female CAN be more aggressive only if they are not handled often.

    Carefresh defiantly!
