I had gotten our hamster from a breeder of Syrians (sp). She no longer breeds. And most stores I see dwarfs - What are the differences of these two? And what about a gerbil? Looking for a small caged animal for the family. We had our hamster for 3 yrs and he has passed - greatly missed!

  1. dwarf hamsters are smaller and come from a different region. their lifespan is 1-2 years, and they are prone to diabetes. dwarfs and gerbils are social and can be kept in groups. gerbils have tails and their eyesight is much better than the hamsters.

  2. syrians are bigger than dwarfs.

think of a gerbil as a breed between mice and hamsters.

gerbils are smaller than hamsters but bigger than mice.

they have a more narrow face than a hamster but more wider than a mouse. hamsters are chubby.

gerbils have shorter tails than mice but longer tails than hamsters.

  3. Get a Teddy Bear hamster. They are the friendliest and easiest to handle. Dwarfs, and Gerbils are hyper and hard to catch. Although I did have a gerbil named Hillary who I loved to death.

  4. Dwarfs can be just as fun and cuddly as Syrians, but they are smaller and need special attention and close watching, because they run pretty fast. But not as fast as a gerbil. Those things are swift and hard to handle. Gerbils aren't as fun, and they aren't cuddly. Also, you'd have to worry about their tale all of the time, because it's so long and easy to accidentally harm it.

Hopefully, you'll find a Syrian hamster at a store. You can ask them when they come in. Otherwise, a dwarf is the best option. Good luck!
