Question:

Hamster has wet tail? I need help.

So I have this dilemma. About a hour ago I went to go feed my two dwarf hamsters. When I opened the food container, a bunch of moth like bugs flew out.. So of course I wasn't going to feed my little darlings that food. I looked all around my kitchen and found frozen strawberries and cucumbers from the garden. So I diced up a few pieces of cucumber, and fed it to them. They ate their fill and went on with life.

About 15-20 minutes after that I let them roam around in their balls. One hamster was fine, but I noticed the other ball was filling up with diarrhea fairly quickly. I opened it up to take the hamster out and it smelled like a freshly pooped in babies diaper. So I cleaned him off and let him sit for a while. He was still plenty active, and acting just the same as he always has.

But now I'm confused. I don't know if it's just the cucumber that gave him the diarrhea, or if it's wet tail. If it was the cucumber, what should I do? And if it's wet tail, should I give him dri tail or take him to the vet promptly tomorrow morning?

  1. Either way I would suggest you first call the vet and ask them about....=) Good luck! They must be adorable =) I'll pray for them!

  2. my hamster got that and we didnt know he had it for a long time and we didnt give him any help and he died! you need to call  a vet quickly!! awwww i hope they make it!

  3. it sounds like u really love them so i know there is emergency vets open 24/7 so u could try 1 of those if its very serious but if its not and u think he will make it through the night take him in the morning

  4. Never give a hamster strawberries!!!  Too much citric acid, it will hurt their tummies.  Also, too many cucumbers aren't good, either. It is a very watery veggie, and too much will cause diarrhea.  It will cause wet tail...since wet tail in hamsters is nothing more than diarrhea.  But, wet tail can also kill them. Take them to the vet ASAP! Try giving them, in the mean time, some oatmeal, it can help stop, or at least slow down, the diarrhea. Also make sure they are drinking plenty of water; you can also mix the water with some Pedialyte, to help prevent dehydration. Separate them, so in case only one is contaminated, it  won't make the other sick. Watch them closely, and keep them in a quiet room, as stress will make them feel worse. Good luck!!!

  5. I saw try the dri tail.
