Hamster help PLEASE! :D?

Question

I just got a hamster today named Sheldon :]. I love him so much already. I wanted to know something though. I want to hold him so when he falls asleep I take him out his cage but then he wakes up again. How can I hold him without him waking up?

it will have to depend on the hamster if it is very sensitive with the surrounding movement or sound.....if it is very sensitive u may not be able to carry it up without waking it up...

You won't be able to hold him without him waking up because he is surprised and wants to explore you. If you put him in your pocket with some of his bedding when he's still a bit drowsy he might fall back asleep again.

My baby hamsters are only 4 weeks old and because they are so young they curl up and fall asleep in my half opened palm so try getting a baby hamster if you want.

maybe you can hold him real gently but when he moves stop

uh i dont think there really is a way to take it out without waking it up but when i take out my hamster it is like past 6 or 7 so they are actually ready to get up

lol it wakes up to easy, its n there instinct because their genes are wild so they react to any movement or noise carefully not to vacume around them! they catch a heart attack!

Unless you drug him he will wake up. Animals (particularly small ones that are usually prey) instinctively know to wake up and become alert if something is happening around them. If you want to hold him just give it a couple weeks for him to get used to his new surroundings and you. He's going to be nervous around all these new things.

i have a hamster called honey that i got last week. if you only got your hamster today then maybe you should get him used to you first. offer him little bits of food from your hand and when he's taking them, gently scoop him up and stroke him. he'll then know that your not a threat and feel comfortable enough to sleep on your hands :)

also if you rub some of sheldon's bedding on your hands before you hold him it means that he'll recognize the scent and be more relaxed about having a nap in your hands :)

I always tried to do this with my syrians gently and quietly scoop them with both hands then put him in a warm spot like jacket. I cant do this with my robovorski hamsters but cant because they wake up easily and get scared and are shy : /.

I think that he is going to wake up regardless.  Hamsters are very sensitive to touch.  All you can do is just be gentle and hopefully (probably) he will just go back to sleep.  

I would also try to not wake him during the day, as hamsters are nocturnal and tend to get cranky when they don't get to sleep in the daytime.

It sounds like you have found a wonderful buddy in Sheldon! =) I am a little curious though, why do want Sheldon to stay asleep? We have found we get the most enjoyment from our hamsters when they're awake and playful! They are so darn cute and for me it would take away from the enjoyment if the hamster slept through it.

I do agree that the hamster will probably be more relaxed if you take Sheldon out of the cage while sleeping, but IMHO it's doubtful he will stay asleep.

Also, as far as training your hamster it's best to have the most interaction possible. The more you play with Sheldon, the better trained Sheldon will be.

Sounds like you you are developing a great "friendship" with your new buddy! Your attentiveness will only benefit how you both bond. =)

you wont be able to pick him up and keep him asleap but if you pick him up very gently out of his bed and put him in a nice warm spot like inside your jacket, he might fall asleap. it very much depends on the hamster. i have had 4 and 2 liked to sleep on me and 2 didn't.
