Hamster help PLEASE?!?

My hamster Stanley is almost a year old. I got him about 6 months ago. During the past month he has stopped using his wheel, he usually runs like mad all night! He also has strange brown scabs on his mouth. He eats and drinks normally, in fact I've seen an increase in his drinking because there is much more pee in his litter box than normal. What is wrong with my golden syrian hamster?! PLEASE HELP ME!

  1. Just to let you know, hamsters are supposed to sleep day time, and wake up night time, and your hamster just has habbits, i meen its like saying why do fat people eat so much, they got fat by eating alot!

  2. he might just be getting older. keep an eye out for signs of wet tail and other sicknesses. For the wheel he might be running when u r asleep. and u just dont know it.

  3. It sounds like it probably has an infection of some kind or maybe a rash.  It may be the cause of your hamster being lethargic. You should take it to a vet and see if you can get some antibiotics for the little guy.

  4. Wow my robo hamster is doing the same thing! Hes kinda fat and his lip is all bitten up. Idk what to do! He sleeps eats poops! Thas all whats wrong with him?

  5. that is kind of odd. has he been doing all of his other nightly activites? he isn't too old run on his wheel.

i looked up the scab thing and heres what look like it may be what your hamster has:

    http://www.vetask.com/hamster/general/sc...

i looked on the first couple of pages of ask and google.com and thats the best i found.

your hamster may just be finding some other things to do than run on his wheel at night. it is natural for him to pee more if he is drinking more. that gets me thinking about the diet too. are you feeding him anything different. it sounds like there may be something with a lot of sodium and maybe more fatty things. check those out as well. if in doubt, try calling the vet. they won't do much over the phone and the actual visit around my place runs around $60! its worth a shot to try though, right??

    goodluck!

  6. My sister's panda hamster used to also run a lot on the wheel at night (which was so annoying)-but anyways she stopped a while ago also

  7. allie, what I'd do is put your hamster's cage next to your computer and go to hamsterdance.com and see if Stanley is a relative of theirs.  If he is, he'll get better, if not, good luck---idk.

  8. Considering hamsters live only two to three years, I'm guessing its an age thing.

I have two Syrian hamsters and they've both been through the same thing.  They're still fairly active, but much less.

Has your hamster gained weight?  From my experience, both hamsters plumped up a bit and slowed down a lot. I suppose its a good thing though. They're more cuddly and easier to catch!  :D

  9. has he gained weight?

  10. my hamster too, she had a sister in her cage but it ate the other hamster i dont know maybe its getting old or somthing spread

  11. maybe he got bored and tired of running!! lol ever think of that!?!? he wants more then just a wheel...! Or maybe you should take him to the vet and say..."Yo vet! there's something wrong with my hamster!" maybe then something good will happen ^_^

    p.s.Check out my 360 profile!!!! <3

  12. That just happens with age. They don't have as much energy to burn off when they get older, so they don't run as much. My Syrian turned one year old on the first and he only runs less than an hour a night.

Don't worry. And are you sure that they are scabs? Unless he lives with another Syrian, which he shouldn't be, there's no reason he would have scabs by his mouth.

  13. omg! i used to have a guinea pig named stanley...im not so sure whats wrong with ur baby id look up syrian hamster infections or diseases did u change his diet?? that mite be the cause..or maybe its time for a check up good luck:]]
