Im getting a hamster soon, Im guessing the youngest are 3-5 months old. Anyways, I was just wondering can I put it in a 10 gallon fish tank with a top that has holes in it so it can breathe. Okay or should I get a regular cage with the wires (i dont want to because it can fit through, its a dwarf hamster, size of a cotton ball(=)

  1. ive seen it done but IDK  I would say get a nice cage like its the OVO thats a good one

  2. The acrylic aquariums are the best and most durable. The wire cages can rust, and the plastic cages can warp and break. At Petsmart the ten gallon aquariums are about eleven dollars, and a ten gallon screen top is around nine dollars. The thing to keep in mind when doing this is that hamsters are escape artists. They can climb up water bottles and push the lid up, so it is best to weight the lid down with something.

  3. Yes there is nothing wrong with that as long as it can't escape and get enough air it will be fine.

  4. those are good for dwarfs because they cant easily get out, but the trade off is that they are harder to clean because of their size.

  5. its actually the BEST type of cage for your hampster. they are desert animals and they like living in a burrow so the stuffyness of a glass tank is  comfortable for them and the glass protects them from drafts and moving air like from a fan, moving air can make them very sick , hampsters kept in glass tanks or plastic tanks live longer then rodents kept in screen or wire cages, not that they live that long to begin with but instead of him dieing after two years he might live four and he will be more comfortable too.

a plain 10 gallon tank with a screen top or a top with small holes is perfect ,put some pine bedding or carefresh bedding(i hear its better for them) and plenty of stuff for him to chew on like carboard toilet paper tubes and paper towel rolls, give him some toilet paper to shred up and maybe some string. give him a place to crawl into and hide too. if you do that he will be the happiest rodent around.

  6. yea you can i had a REALYYYY small hamster and i got a wire cage for it and the first day it got out so i bought a fish tank and they have these like special lids that you can put on it so i bout that to and then i just bought like stuff to put on the bottom and it was PERFECT!

  7. Ive had hamsters in the past, and still do today!

I keep them in a fish aquarium, with bedding and hamster wheel, food and water.

They keep fine. It gives them space to roam around and play.

  8. great idea.. AS LONG AS IT HAS NO WATER.. lol i hae done it and as lond as its at least 10 gallons its fine sometimes better then regular cages just make sure to have lots of toys, tubes and treats
