Hamster infection details in question?

I own 6 hamsters. Recently, I noticed red lumps growing on their private areas and some black spots on those lumps. This only occurs to the girl hamsters. What should I do? (they are Russian Dwarf hamsters approximately 5 months old. One was pregnant once before.)

  1. Wow, that doesnt sound good. What ever it is they all seem to have it. I bet the males do too but internally. You might have to call a vet and get an antibiotic for them or it will get worse.

  2. I think it is best you take them to a vet for opinion and medications.

Any abnormal red lump on hamsters can indicate an abcess or cyst and the fact that it has spread to all the females indicates it is highly infectious and most probably caused by a fungal or bacterial infection. There is an fungal infection caused by Aspergillus Fungus that can happen when wood chips are used as bedding and can cause sores on the hamster fur.

Clean out their cage thoroughly, if you are using wood chips as bedding, stop it completely and change to plain ripped toilet paper. And yes, take them immediately to a vet for medications.
