Question:

Hamster is Frightened of Everything

Ive had a new cage for about 3 days now which is large, more open spaced and has metal bars instead of plastic, the only problem is my male hamster, Moley is frightened of it and darts in the pipes if you move or make a sound, the first time i put him in there he was curious but not scared and was testing the wheel and when he discovered the pipes and his bed which is on top of the cage he has become frightened of everything, i havent picked him up ive just talked to him softly and all he does is stay in his bed and doesn't hardly come out of his bed, he only comes out for a little while at night for food and water and i dont think he has even been on the wheel yet. i dont want to put him back in his old cage as he is too big for it and this new one is large and fun for him, even if i open the cage door to change food he darts in his pipes and when i leave he goes back to bed.

Anyone got any tips on how to calm him down or something??

btw my cage is a crittertrail 3 cage if you want to see what type of cage it is, here is a link

  1. this happened to my hamster. put some toys so its not so open. also, play with him. like stick your hand in the cage so he knows it you and that its safe. since its a couple stories you could put treats on each floor to make him comfeterble. i spelled that wrong. oh well. give him some time. he'll get used to it!!!  ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚™Â¥Ã¢Â™Â¥Ã¢Â™Â¥Ã¢Â™Â¥good luck!!!♥♥♥♥

  2. It's very easy what you do. You have to show him it is not dangerous and perfectly safe. I have a few methods to share with you.

    1. (optional) Sell the old cage and use the money to buy a new one here is a of cages to get.

Copy and paste this on the browser. Check the first 4.

    2. This is sort of evil by ok. Tape a piece of sunflower seed onto a pencil  and let your hamster smell it then slowly lead it to the first part of the cage and slowly day by day keep doing this letting it explore new areas.

3.If you have done number 2 then 3 is easy. When you get to the wheel start spinning it light with your index and middle finger. Your hamster will learn that it's safe to ride the wheel.

    4. Try hand feeding it he won't bite you simply take some cabbage or carrot and let it near his nose then make it follow the treat and guide it to the middle of it's cage. and feed it to him. Do this everyday but with his food.

If you be patience and do all this then your hamster will adore your new cage.

Hope this will bring you and your hammy together

  3. Yeah, my hamster did the same thing, just that 3 days is probably not enough, he needs more time to settle in, Just keep doing what you are doing until he gets used to it,
