Question:

Hamster is dragging her hind quarters.....?

About a month ago, my hamster jumped out of my hand and landed on the floor. The same evening, she was jerking her back legs in squeeling in pain. I let her be quiet for a couple of days, took her toys and wheel out of the cage and she seeming fine a few days later. She was back walking around like normal, letting me pick her up, crawling into my hands, everything. All of a sudden last night, I went to give her her daily treats of fresh veggies, and she was dragging her entire hind quarters. She doesn't seem to be in pain, as she is not squeeling and she pulls herself around with her front legs as if wanting to be picked up. We have not had any further accidents since the first one. Anyone have any ideas?

  1. her back legs could be broken  see a vet asap and my hamster jumps to. one of the questions i posted was about that. people say to get a ball and let them rome where thay cant get hurt.

  2. this may not even be relevant but hamsters get something called wet tail. it is a disease and they do drag thier back end

  3. By the way it sounds to me it could possibly be a spinal injury.  Or maybe she broke both of her back legs.  Maybe when you "let her be quiet for a couple of days" maybe they felt better or slightly healed and then getting active again hurt them again.  You should call a vet and ask them about it.  How big is your cage? I was reading something earlier about cage paralysis.  I am going to see if i can find the website for you.

*add* http://www.hamsterific.com/IllnessGuide.... I don't know how trustworthy that site is, but maybe it will help you figure out what is wrong. Good luck

  4. Take her to a vet immediately. Hamsters are prone to damaging their spinal cords when they fall from heights and this can cause paralysis slowly in their hind quarters. The symptoms that she has including no pain and dragging the hind region strongly point to paralysis.

The vet would be able to tell you accurately what is the diagnosis and what are steps you can take to take care of her and try to heal her.

    Hope she gets well soon!
