My hamster and her cage always really smells.

I clean out her cage every week, but the smell still stinks up my room, what can I do?

  1. I had this problem as well. You can try one of several things:

    >LITTER BOX: Hamsters will sometimes use the litter box, but when I tried using it, my hamster just chewed it up. Not exactly the easiest of best choice.

    >CLEANING: Clean more often or in a different way. If you're just removing the bedding, try taking a damp cloth and just wiping down the cage and all the areas.

In more extreme cases, you can use White Vinegar. This really helps with odor. All you have to do is wash out the cage thoroughly, splash some White Vinegar (I don't know about other Vinegars, you'd have to research it) on the cage where it smells, let it sit and even air dry if you want. Wiping it doesn't hurt though, but sometimes it is less effective.

    >DIET: Make sure you're feeding her the proper diet. Feeding her too many treats, the wrong diet, or giving her too much "people" food could cause something like this in the form of stinky urine or wet p**p.

    >YOUR ROOM: If your hamster has a wire cage, try wiping down the wall behind her cage. I had a couple of hamsters that would spray urine on my walls (YUCK!), but wiping it down with a wet rag or Clorox Wipe fixed that problem up nice. Too bad it had to be done weekly like cleaning the cage.

    >THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX: Maybe it's not your hamster? Okay, it probably is, but it never hurts to clean up your room real well, vacuum it, and wipe down your desk and shelves. You might have spilled something awhile ago that picked up your hamster's scent; e.g. You spilled something sticky like pop that, when you clean the cage, dust flew around and got on it. Enough times and it picked up the scent and it's hiding from you.

    >THE CAGE: So maybe it isn't that you don't clean it often enough, maybe it's just the cage. Some cages are smellier than others. Cages with a plastic tray bottom will smell more as the scent sticks to the plastic more than it does to glass bottom cages. You might want to consider buying a different cage all together if the material it is made up of allows urine to soak into it and smell. Though treating it with Vinegar may help your problem some.

    I hope I helped!! - sebastian

  13. Do you use disinfectant??

You can buy pet safe hamster cage disinfectants to make it cleaner and more sanitary for longer.

Also, i encourage you to clean out the cage more than once a week. Try 2-3 times.

  14. they are just generally smelly lol

when i had a hamster i came across lavender scented wood shavings, specially designed for use with hamsters so its safe, and will make the cage less stinky.

i know it sounds a bit ridiculous and i laughed when i first saw it in the pet shop but it was pretty good stuff, so if you can find it you might like to give that a try.

only other suggestion i have would be to clean it out more often but that would be a pain in the *** lol

  15. hamsters are just smelly. you can but scented wood chips. I bought this banana thing a petsmart and you put a few drops (as on label) and it doesn't taste any different then water but it makes their urin smell like bananas... there are more scents but i like banana the best.
