Hamster!!!?

Question

ok i have a hamster cage and it was tall and too small so i flipped it so it could be longer. i put the bedding in but it would fall through the wire, so i made a card board box and put it inside to catch the bedding. Is it dangerous for the hamster? is it ok if she chews on cardboard? is it deadly or unhealthy? is she really eating it or just chewing it?thanks!

she is probly just using it as padding. My hamser does it a lot with news paper when I clean his cage.

Cardboard is absolutely fine. Sometimes they do it out of boredom, or because they want to make a nest.  Plus, it's way better than newspaper: the ink is often poisonous and can harm animals.

It is perfectly alright to use cardboard. It helps your hamster in two ways -

As a base over the wire so that when she walks, she would not get her little paws caught in the wires and hurt herself

As a gnawing tool for her so that she can keep her teeth in good condition.

Hamsters don't eat cardboard or bedding, they only "gnaw" on it since it helps them to keep their teeth in correct length. It is a very healthy practice.

If you want to distract her from the cardboard, you can give her chew sticks, hard dog biscuits or empty toilet rolls but if she continues to gnaw at the cardboard base, leave her to it since it would cause no harm to her, only you might have to replace the base when she has gnawed it completely out of shape!

no its OK! its good that she has something to chew on. It wares their teeth down some! if they don't then you have to cut them witch is very painful. She is not eating it she is putting in in her cheeks. There like a hamsters pockets! But if you don't like her chewing on the cardboard put a block of wood in(small 3in buy 2in) or get her a salt l**k! I prefer the salt l**k because it gives her natural salt(she needs) something to do, and weirs down her teeth! I'm glad to here your trying to give her more space! Hope this helps! :) :)

i think they just chew on it - its good for wearing their teeth down and they make nests and stuff out of it - as long as you make sure her feet dont get stuck inbetween the box and the wire if you lifted the box up of something she should be very happy =D

Cardboard is safe for hamsters to chew on. A lot of hamster sites say u should put toilet paper rolls in their cage to burrow,play, & chew with.

I give my hamster toilet roll tubes to play with and he chews them and makes bedding with it, and hes been perfectly healthy in the 2 years ive had him.
