i thought my hamster (trippy) had mite and decided to use this virgin olive oil recipe to kill the mites. i got extra virgin olive oil and rubbed it all around the body but i was careful that none could get in the eyes. then i used simple green's all purpose wipes to wipe the cage down. when everything was all done i put her back in her cage. a couple of mins later i notice that she jsut sat there and stare with her eyes wide open. she then falls to the side slowy... very very slowy.. with her eyes wide open still. i freaked and pick her up, she reacted and started to act like her old slef again. i put her back to the cage and the whole falling in slow montion appears. again, i picked her up and she was all good. and now, shes sleeping, hopefull.

well my point is..

what is happening??? is she sick???

is it b/c of the wipes? but its non toxic and all natural, it should bring any harm to trippy!

and plzz i give my anwsers like "well only the vets knows."

  1. I am really not sure if this olive oil recipe is from a good source. I have never used it and did not know such a recipe existed for hamster mites.

Olive oil is very sticky and even if you try to wipe it down, it could still be sticking to the fur. Please check the hamster's fur again to see if it is super clean. Also the oil has a odor which can stick for long to the fur. It is very difficult to tell from her symptoms what is happening to her and my guess is this oil on her fur is confusing your hamster since her fur is not smelling like her fur at all (hamsters identify themselves and others mainly from the scent) or the odor from the oil is causing her to feel unwell and hence the reaction.

I think the best would be to take her to a vet who can give her a proper cleaning and remove all remnants and odor of olive oil from her fur, otherwise she might get sick. Don't give her a bath at home since hamsters should not be given bath and this will make her sick too.

In the future, use a anti-mite spray approved by your vet for treating mites on your hamster and you have to clean the cage with warm soapy water and disinfectant and dry it out completely, just wiping it won't remove the mites from the cage.

  2. That is really strange. If I was you, I'd wash the WHOLE cage down with hot soapy water. Then i'd give Trippy a bath.

  3. I looked up the simple green wipes and it said it can cause irritation to the sinuses. Give it lots of fresh air and if he doesn't improve call the vet and ask for some advice.

  4. Put a sand bath (use a little bowl) in her cage. i use chinchilla sand with my hammies and they love it, it keeps their coats really soft and clean. but make sure you remove it after a little while because they also like to defecate in them.
