dont cut the nails put some thing rough in the hamsters cage so he can wear down his nails

You don't need to cut them your self. Just lay some sand paper down in the cage and let your hamster run around on that, it will file it's nails down.

Remove the sand paper when you see that you hamster has started chewing on it.
