Question:

Hamsters and Fruit Flies?

I have 2 dwarf hamsters along with a zoo of animals in my apartment. I noticed a couple weeks ago that we had fruit flies in our kitchen, mostly around the hamster cage. I change the shavings once a week and I thought that might get rid for them. It didn't so I put some fruit in a bowl, covered it with plastic wrap and poked holes in it. (I read this online) I caught a lot of fruit flies but the problem is still there. I don't know if they are reproducing in the hamster cage or not and I don't want them to harm the hamsters. Is there any other way to get rid of them that won't harm the animals? They don't seem to bother any of the other animals, only the hamsters.

  1. Fruit flies are terrible. What you should do is clean the cage about 2-3 times a week until they are completely gone ( I know it seems like a lot but you have to keep it clean so they cannot reproduce), also since your hamsters are in the kitchen make sure your trash is emptied often and also buy some drano for the sink and poor it down there once a week for a few weeks. Fruit flies go down in drains where it is all nasty and reproduce. Also try getting one of those sticky strips you can hang from somewhere so they get stuck to that. They also love vinegar so you could try to make a vinegar trap of your own.

  2. well what bedding do u use? switch to care fresh that might help. sry, tough question.       hope this helped! :) ♥

  3. The only other option you would have is to be sure to take out uneaten food every day.  That is tricky seeing as they like to hide it.

Are you giving fresh fruits and veggies?

Another possibility is do your dwarf Hamsters drink a lot?  Sometimes if they have diabetes they can smell sweet attracting fruit flies.

I know that doesn't help completely but with limited information I can't really give too many answers.

  4. Since you don't give them fresh fruit I'd say the bedding could be the problem as Hamsters like to hide seeds and such in their bedding then they end up peeing on it and such and then gross little flys can come around.

Try carefresh bedding it's more expensive but I noticed when I switched to it that it absorbs more and keeps the cage cleaner longer. If that still doesn't solve the problem then you might try taking the Hamsters out of the kitchen as it may be something else in your kitchen causing the problem and the flies just end up in the Hamster cages.

  5. well try moving the first and the bedding to

or just kill the flies or make them go some were else

well that all i got hope that helped
