Hamsters in a fish tank?

Question

i have about a 20 gallon fish tank that has been empty for awhile now..

i was thinking of either buying two hamster and letting them live in there ..

do you guys think that's a good idea?

i've read on other websites that it would be a good idea after all..., and i dont want to harm the hamster by having them suffocating in the fish tank -_-

i just want to know what do you guys think?

depends on what kind of hammy. if you want two you must get dwarves because syrians will killl each other and plus the tank is too small for 2 syrians. as long as you have the ventilated screen on top, it will be good. you might want to think about getting one syrian for the tank.

i have had gerbils in a fish tank before, put a mixture of peat (soil) and shavings in the tank, they used to love it and you could see all their burrows under neath

You could put the hamsters in a fish tank but you need a screen top for it and they will be ok but they need alot of toys to play with.GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Fish tanks can make good cages as long as there is adequate ventilation. Is your tank a 20 gallon "tall" or "long"? The tall tanks have higher sides and the ventilation won't be as good.

You can buy mesh tops made for tanks in most pet stores.

Also, if you buy TWO hamsters, make sure they are dwarf hamsters, not Syrians. Syrian hamsters - also called teddy bears, black bears, honey bears, panda bears, fancy hamsters, common hamsters, golden hamsters, short-haired hamsters, long-haired hamsters - are solitary by nature and need to be kept one per cage.

As long as the area of the room you put them in has good air flow, and you don't put something over the top of the tank, they should be OK.  recommend you buy something like a HabiTrail for them to move around some, though, in addition to an exercise wheel.  Watch out for large temperature rises inside the tank, as well.
